Widener University is currently seeking an Associate Professor of Higher Education Leadership from a diverse group of faculty candidates to coordinate our higher education leadership certificate, master’s and doctoral programs.

Qualified candidates will teach in the Higher Educational Leadership program; maintain an active research agenda; advise and mentor students and supervise dissertations; and provide service to the institution. Consideration may be given to candidates with strong teaching experience; whose research is centered in questions of community colleges and community college leadership; diversity, equity, and access issues in higher education; or with higher education leadership experience.

Regardless of area, all applicants must have a track record of research and teaching demonstrating capacity to facilitate diverse perspectives, further equity, and promote inclusion for all students. We seek individuals with innovative ideas about how graduate education and research can contribute to the betterment of society and help postsecondary education, and community colleges in particular, meet contemporary challenges.

Duties and Responsibilities:  (include but are not limited to)

Essential Duties:

  • Candidates will be expected to pursue an active research agenda, teach graduate courses, advise graduate students, direct doctoral dissertations, and serve as an active member of the Center for Education Graduate Program, the University, and higher education professional communities.
  • Experience mentoring students of diverse backgrounds, including women, students of color, and first-generation college students, is desired.
  • Service expectations include but are not limited to participation on faculty governance committees; coordination with resource offices involving distance learning, student affairs, and college/university administration.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (Education/Training and Experience Required):


  • Candidates shall hold the terminal qualification in Higher Education Leadership (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) or a closely related field.
  • Candidates must also demonstrate a record of excellence as a teacher and scholar in a tenured faculty appointment with credentials that would qualify the individual for appointment as an associate professor at Widener.
  • A strong record of research and publication in one or more desired higher education specialization areas
  • Significant, successful experience teaching one or more graduate-level courses in a higher education or student affairs graduate program
  • Demonstrated teaching ability, strong methodological skills, and desire to continue research.
  • Demonstration of collaborative experiences with colleagues in their profession and workplace
  • Evidence of significant, successful experience in advising and/or mentoring graduate students, or evidence of the potential to do s

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:

  • Must be able to sit, stand and move about classroom and campus for extended periods of time. Must be able to sit and work behind a computer for 2 or more hours at a time.
  • May need to lift supplies of up to 20lbs per item.
  • May be required to be available to students via phone, email or other means of communication nights and weekends.
