Campus Safety Lieutenant - 2nd Shift Main Campus

Campus Safety Lieutenants are responsible for ensuring the safety and general well-being of all University community members, safeguarding university property and enforcing university policies and rules.  This role instills decorum of honesty and professionalism within themselves and employees, and provides first-line supervision of all officers assigned to a shift including, but not limited to, Officers, Corporals/ Dispatchers, Sergeants, van and shuttle drivers.

Duties and Responsibilities:  (include but are not limited to)

Essential Duties

  • Leads staff in policy, procedures, and protocols.
  • Establish staffing coverage and patrol standards for fixed post, bicycle, foot and vehicular patrols.
  • Acts as lead officer in campus safety investigations.
  • Coordinates response to emergency and crisis situations that may occur, and serves as direct liaison with outside agencies such as police, fire and EMS agencies.
  • Demonstrated understanding of a culturally diverse campus and student population.
  • Participate in the evaluation of performance for all direct reports.
  • Leads staff in policy, procedures, and protocols.
  • Oversees training and ensures Officers are proficient in their duties.
  • Compiles statistics and other reports regarding department activities and incidents
  • Read and review reports to ensure accuracy and objectivity.
  • Interacts professionally with the public, local and state police officials as needed.
  • Ensure that officers have proper working equipment and are in required uniform.
  • Reviews and approves time worked and/or time off.

 Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Patrols university building and grounds. 
  • Escorts university community members to/from buildings and parking lots. 
  • Provides emergency transportation for university community.
  • Issues verbal warnings and parking citations.
  • Performs the duties of a dispatcher.
  • Conduct formal training classes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (Education/Training and Experience Required)

Required

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in a security related field.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience
  • A valid driver's license and insurability at the time of appointment and must maintain such license and insurability throughout the tenure of employment.
  • Successful completion and passing of criminal background and driver history check.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience in implementing/conducting training programs.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and Outlook.
  • Experience at a school or campus/university setting
  • CPR certification

 Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:

  • Ability to walk for extended periods across campus in all weather conditions. 
  • Ability to walk up and down steps both inside and outside of buildings.
  • Ability to stand and/or sit for extended periods both inside and outside of buildings.
  • Ability to bend, stoop and lift objects weighing up to 35 lbs.

 

Primary type of patrol is on foot (walking outdoors for their shift) across the university, throughout buildings, university properties and any designated areas.  These shifts average 8 hours.
