Widener University is currently seeking a Campus Safety Corporal to join our team. Campus Safety Corporal/Dispatchers are responsible for the efficient operation of the Campus Safety dispatch office.  Emphasis will focus on the operation of the computer aided dispatch system, managing emergency and non-emergency reports and dispatching the appropriate service, operation/relay of the radio communication system and emergency telephone systems, monitoring alarm systems, card access, and closed circuit TV screen monitors, recording and maintaining appropriate Campus Safety documentation, and key control.

A Campus Safety Corporal is assigned to a specific shift that averages 8 hours and is generally indoors.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):

Essential duties:

  • Able to multitask during stressful and non-stressful situations.
  • Communicate via two-way radio and dispatch officers and other University service units to assignments; relays messages by radio or telephone to and from officers, other service units of the University and agencies outside of the University.
  • Able to acquire the appropriate information during phone calls and walk-up reports/requests to ensure a timely and appropriate Campus Safety response and field report.
  • Able to operate the department computer aided dispatch system, alarm systems, closed circuit TV screens, card access, maintains the record systems of the department; maintains, key control, and issues equipment used by field personnel.
  • Ability to troubleshoot minor technological issues that occur with safety systems.  Notifies administration of issues they are unable to resolve.
  • Notification of police, fire or medical assistance, as needed.
  • Prepares and maintains the communications log, which includes telephone service requests and other notifications for services; processes confidential materials/crime reports.
  • Types, files input and retrieves data on personal computers; aides and directs visitors to appropriate locations; prepares information research for monthly reports on overall departmental activity.
  • Handles lost and found property; assigns a case number; attempts to identify/contact owner.
  • Monitors employee/students transportation requests.
  • General clerical duties such as typing, filing, etc.
  • Keeps a daily information document.
  • Performs the duties of a Campus Safety Officer as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or directed. 

Secondary responsibilities:

  • Flexibility to work additional shifts as needed or required, including but not limited to the Safety office on campus.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or directed. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required):

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • A minimum of one (1+) year of experience in a security related field.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to interact professionally with the public.
  • Positive and professional demeanor.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check to include the PA Criminal PA Child Abuse and FBI.

Preferred:

  • Experience as a dispatcher.
  • Experience in the use of law enforcement, campus or public safety software systems.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR UNUSUAL HOURS: 

  • Ability to walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to walk up and down steps both inside and outside of buildings.
  • Ability to walk outdoors in your assigned area in all types of weather conditions.
  • Ability to stand and/or sit for extended periods of time both inside and outside of buildings.
  • Ability to lift objects weighing up to 35 lbs.
