Widener University is currently seeking a Campus Safety Sergeant to join our 1st shift team. Campus Safety Sergeants are responsible for ensuring the safety and general well-being of all University community members, safeguarding university property and enforcing university policies and rules. Emphasis will focus on the supervision of officers/sectors, managing the response of calls for service and criminal incidents, fostering good community relations and providing professional service.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to) :
Sergeants are assigned to a specific shift. Primary type of patrol is foot patrol (which requires individuals to walk for their shift) across the University, throughout buildings, University properties and any designated area. These shifts average 8-10 hours and are outdoors. Individuals may also have a specific area of assignment.
Campus Safety Sergeants are required to provide first-line supervision of all subordinate personnel assigned to their shift including, but not limited to, Campus Safety Officers, Corporals/ Dispatchers, van and shuttle drivers and student employees of the Campus Safety Department.
Sergeants will manage their supervisory sector and the officers assigned to that area(s). They will supervise the response for any calls for service and criminal incidents that occur.
Sergeants will build positive relationships with University community members and groups.
Sergeants are required to perform associated supervisory duties as assigned by the Shift Lieutenant.
Patrols university building and grounds; examines entrances, windows and internal doors to determine that they are secure.
Responds to reports of irregularities such as fire hazards, facilities malfunctions, physical altercations, accidents and criminal activities. Notifies dispatcher if police, fire or ambulance units are required.
Oversees campus safety investigations performed by officers; will manage or refer complicated investigations to the Lieutenant or Campus Safety Administration.
Prepares reports accurately and objectively detailing incidents on campus. Reviews all reports submitted by officers during the shift to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to being relieved of duty.
Escorts university community members to/from buildings and parking lots. Provides emergency transportation for university community.
Ensures employee/students transportation requests are completed as required.
Issues verbal warnings, parking citations, and authorizes the immobilization of vehicles in the absence of the Lieutenant.
Interact with local and state police officials.
Assist the Lieutenant to provide on-the-job training of all personnel assigned to the shift and documentation of same.
Ensures that each member assigned is in their proper uniform, through inspection of uniforms and equipment.
Instills decorum of honesty and professionalism within themselves and the employees assigned to them and adheres to the chain-of-command whenever practical.
Perform duties of a dispatcher or Campus Safety Officer or Corporal as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned or directed.

Experience and Skills
Knowledge of law enforcement practices, methods, and techniques.
Knowledge of criminal laws and departmental regulations and procedures.
Knowledge of the Student Handbook, specifically the Student Code of Conduct.
Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
Ability to supervise a small to medium sized public safety staff.
Ability to enforce laws and regulations and determine appropriate law enforcement procedures.
Ability to review and revise documentation from subordinate staff and compile statistics for departmental and special reports.
Ability to operate motor vehicles used in work activities.
Performing other duties as assigned, that are appropriate for the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (Education/Training and Experience Required)
High School Diploma or equivalent
Three (3+) years progressive law enforcement, campus or public safety experience.
A minimum of one (1+) year of supervisory and/or dispatch experience
Valid Driver’s License
Must have the ability to interact professionally with the public.
Able to work various hours and/or days.
Experience in higher education.
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
The ability to walk for extended periods of time.
The ability to walk up and down steps both inside and outside of buildings.
The ability to walk outdoors in your assigned area in all types of weather conditions.
The ability to stand and/or sit for extended periods of time both inside and outside of buildings.
The ability to lift objects weighing up to 35 lbs.
