Assistant Director of Advising and Retention


Widener University is currently seeking an Assistant Director of Advising and Retention in the School of Nursing. This role reports to Assistant Dean.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):

 Essential duties:

  • Serves as an advisor to current prelicensure nursing students
  • Supports students in establishing realistic and attainable academic goals
  • Utilizes Civitas and other methods to identify current and potential challenges that may negatively impact student success
  • Monitors student academic progress and make appropriate referrals to campus resources
  • Coordinates the SON tutoring program
  • Coordinates Nursing undergraduate programming during new student orientation
  • Processes change of major requests, counsels students on major, course requirements, and follow up to ensure transition to new major
  • Creates advising materials and checklists for students and faculty mentors
  • Provides guidance to faculty mentors related to student advisement
  • Assists the Assistant Dean with student recognition ceremonies
  • Assists with recruitment of prospective students by coordinating and executing information sessions, Widener Days, Accepted Student Days and other recruitment events.
  • Collaborates with Residence Life on the Living and Learning Community (LLC) by recruiting prospective students, reviewing applications with the Assistant Dean, and planning events.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned or directed.

Secondary responsibilities:

  • Assist with data collection, analyses, and creation of reports to support the undergraduate program
  • Review and submit corrections to admissions and records to ensure accuracy

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required): 


  • Master’s Degree in education, social work, counseling, or higher education  from an accredited institution
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in advising/student support.
  • Knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures in advising or counseling, and demonstrated commitment to and record of working with students.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have strong organizational skills, flexible, and superior interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with students, support, and professional staff, and faculty.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Ability to think critically to resolve problems or issues that arise.
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook


  • Experience with Civitas, Colleague and Student Planning 


  • Must be flexible, some evenings and weekends are required.
