Widener University Delaware Law School is currently seeking an Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Located in Wilmington, Delaware, Delaware Law School is committed to creating and fostering a learning environment and community that is welcoming, inclusive, diverse, and equitable for all students, faculty and staff. 

Reporting to the Dean of Delaware Law School, the Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will serve as a key member of the school leadership team whose primary responsibility will be to spearhead the law school’s diversity initiatives and to serve as a liaison among students, faculty and staff related to DEI. 

This role will serve as the principal expert on developing policies, programming, training, procedures and partnerships to ensure that all community members have fair and equal access to educational and experiential learning opportunities at Delaware Law School. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):

Essential duties:

The duties assigned to the position below, are not meant to represent the entirety of the role. 

Faculty/Students/Teaching

  • Lead school-wide DEI initiatives including but not limited to, the design, development and implementation of DEI policies, processes, programs and training related to the overall student experience at the law school to ensure a culture of inclusivity, diversity and tolerance. 
  • Serve as point of contact for the school regarding the integration of diverse students into the law school community. 
  • Help identify, investigate and resolve complex DEI issues within the school, which could have university-wide impact.
  • Serve as point of contact for students, faculty and staff in issues related to DEI on the campus.
  • Create, administer and publish results of an annual climate survey. 
  • Work with committees or departments that influence diversity within the Law School and the profession, including admissions, faculty hiring, and career development, alumni relations, and fundraising.
  • Supporting the Associate Dean of Student Academic Affairs, advise and counsel law students and student affinity groups regarding issues related to DEI.
  • Provide applicable coaching and mentoring to students, and senior leadership.
  • Work collaboratively with other law school units, programs, and centers to improve effectiveness of services for all students.
  • Liaison with the Widener University Main Campus Chief Diversity Officer regarding DEI strategies and issues, with an informal “dotted line” report to that Chief Diversity Officer.
  • Supporting the Associate Dean of Students, use advanced professional knowledge requiring broad discretion and judgment to serve as the ombudsman/advisor to Delaware Law students
  • Draft and publish Delaware Law School Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion annual report, with appropriate data and elaborative narrative.
  • Support the Dean by providing strategic guidance for the advancement of DEI initiatives in furtherance of the Law School’s commitment to the continued development of an inclusive, student-focused culture.
  • Develop vision, scope, key program deliverables/outcomes; analyze, measure effectiveness and oversee programs and tools for delivery of DEI student programs
  • Identify facilitators and schedule annual faculty and administrative Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion training on topics such as cultural competency and implicit bias.
  • Organize programming on diversity and social justice issues at the Law School, including programs such as “Deans’ Forums,” and programs conducted in partnership with student organizations and legal and civic organizations within the community and the profession, including Continuing Legal Education programs sponsored by the Law School or conducted in partnership with outside agencies.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Student Academic Affairs to provide Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion training for student leaders, student organizations and Law School journals and honor societies.
  • Prepare and monitor budget for DEI initiatives.

External Administrative Duties

 

  • Serve as the Delaware Law School representative to the Delaware Supreme Court Initiative on Diversity. 
  • Draft legal briefs amicus curiae, legislative reform proposals, and administrative agency rulemaking notice and comment submissions in coordination with faculty and students on advocacy efforts
  • Represent Delaware Law School periodically with the following organizations: Delaware State Bar Association, and other regional and national bar and law school groups, including the Philadelphia Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Association of American Law Schools, in promoting greater diversity within the legal profession.
  • Design and administer pipeline programs targeting Delaware and regional middle and high schools and extending through college programs to encourage minority students to pursue legal careers and consider matriculation at Delaware Law School and practicing law in Delaware.  
  • Coordinate with Public Interest Resource Center Director to place students in advocacy and service roles (externships) in the  community relating to social justice issues.

 Secondary responsibilities:

  • Teaching one annual Law School course on a subject germane to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion issues.  (Examples might include “Race and the Criminal Justice System” or “Diversity Issues and Corporate Law Practice and Governance.”)
  • Participate in fundraising efforts to grow and fund diversity pipeline, recruitment efforts. 
  • Serve as an administrative representative to the Law School Standing Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required):

Required:

  • Juris Doctorate licensed to practice law in the state of Delaware (or licensed in a different state with willingness to sit for DE bar).
  • Minimum three (3+) years relevant experience, or combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise germane to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion matters in the practice of law and the study of law.
  • Knowledgeable in the field of diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education.
  • Understanding of and experience with adult learning methods and developing training.
  • Experience developing programs and systems within an educational or related work environment. 
  • Significant experience working in a multicultural environment with individuals of different races, ethnicities, and backgrounds.
  • Experience in counseling, student services, or administration in higher education, with a strong preference for experience in a law school environment.
  • Ability to establish credibility and effective working relationships across an institution.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, sensitively written materials for a wide range of readers.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze the needs of individual and groups of students, and to be knowledgeable about the range of University resources available to students is required.
  • Excellent judgement and discretion      

Preferred:

  • Experience in serving as administrative representative to outside governmental, social service, or other entities.
  • Experience teaching in a higher education environment
  • Certification or significant experience in DEI initiatives

 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR UNUSUAL HOURS: 

  • Occasionally standing, walking, or climbing stairs. Ability to be mobile between workstations, various campus buildings, and all locations in the buildings. 
  • Some night and weekend work may be occasionally required.
