Widener University is currently seeking a Campus Safety Sergeant to join our 2nd shift team ay our Delaware Law School. Campus Safety Sergeants are responsible for ensuring the safety and general well-being of all University community members, safeguarding university property and enforcing university policies and rules.  Emphasis will focus on the supervision of officers/sectors, managing the response of calls for service and criminal incidents, fostering good community relations and providing professional service.

Duties and Responsibilities:  (include but are not limited to)

Essential Duties

  • Sergeants are assigned to a specific shift. Primary type of patrol is foot patrol (which requires individuals to walk for their shift) across the University, throughout buildings, University properties and any designated area.  These shifts average 8 hours and are outdoors.  Individuals may also have a specific area of assignment.
  • Provides first line supervision of campus safety officers assigned to shift; performs associated supervisory duties as assigned by the Shift Lieutenant
  • Patrols university building and grounds; examines entrances, windows and internal doors to determine that they are secure. 
  • Responds to reports of irregularities such as fire hazards, facilities malfunctions, physical altercations, accidents and criminal activities.  Notifies dispatcher if police, fire or ambulance units are required.
  • Oversees campus safety investigations performed by officers; refers complicated investigations to the Assistant Director of Campus Safety.
  • Prepares reports accurately and objectively detailing incidents on campus. Reviews all reports submitted by officers during the shift to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to being relieved of duty.
  • Escorts university community members to/from buildings and parking lots.  Provides emergency transportation for university community.
  • Acts as lead officer in campus safety investigations.
  • Issues verbal warnings and parking citations.
  • Interact with local and state police officials.
  • Performs the duties of a dispatcher.
  • Responsible for the on-the-job training of all personnel assigned to their shift and documentation of same.
  • Responsible for scheduling shifts
  • Ensures that each member assigned is in their proper uniform, through inspection of uniforms and equipment.
  • Instills decorum of honesty and professionalism within themselves and the employees assigned to them and adheres to the chain-of-command whenever practical.
  • Perform duties of a Campus Safety Officer as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned or directed.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Able to work other shifts when needed or required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or directed.                                                      


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (education/training and experience required)


  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a security related field.
  • A minimum of one year of supervisory and/or dispatch experience
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Must have the ability to interact professionally with the public.


  • Able to work various hours and/or days.
  • Experience in higher education.

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:

  • The ability to walk for extended periods of time.
  • The ability to walk up and down steps both inside and outside of buildings.
  • The ability to walk outdoors in your assigned area in all types of weather conditions.
  • The ability to stand and/or sit for extended periods of time both inside and outside of buildings.
  • The ability to lift objects weighing up to 35 lbs.
