Widener University is currently seeking an Executive Director in the Center for Civic and Global Engagement within the Division of Student Affairs.  This role reports to the Associate Dean of Students and works closely with faculty serving as academic directors and those serving on Center advisory boards, including a partnership with Academic Service Learning faculty.  They provide institution-wide leadership for global engagement, civic engagement, and international student services/education and study abroad programs. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):

Essential Duties:

  • Strategize and implement all services, initiatives and projects for the Center, including program development, training and assessment.
  • Work closely with the Faculty Directors and faculty advisory boards regarding planning for Center vision, strategic planning and program initiatives.
  • Serve as a member of the faculty Global Engagement and Community Advisory Boards, and participate in institutional discussions regarding academic, global and civic engagement issues. 
  • Plan and manage the Center budget and related reporting.
  • Supervise four full-time staff members and create opportunities for staff development.
  • Serve as advocate to support the University and division’s strategic diversity initiatives to create a welcoming campus for all students by incorporating multicultural perspectives and frameworks into Center programs.
  • Coordinate, review and assess administrative processes and risk management related to conducting and participating in global, civic, and international education engagement activities.
  • Implement efforts to measure student learning outcomes, for both curricular and co-curricular activities, in collaboration with the faculty.
  • Work closely with Academic Service Learning faculty to support course related service programming and initiatives. 
  • Oversee the branding and marketing of the Center for Civic and Global Engagement including regular communication with internal and external stakeholders.

Global Engagement:

  • Serve as the primary point person regarding global engagement partners, including international colleges and universities and global service organizations, thoughtfully connecting them with Widener faculty and students and meeting with institutional leaders as needed.
  • In collaboration with faculty members and the Office of the Provost, develop partnerships leading to the development of global engagement courses.
  • Serve as primary contact and partner for faculty who are leading students on global engagement trips.
  • Work with faculty academic directors and provide administrative and logistical support for global engagement activities, including international academic trips for students.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, administration and global partners on grants to enrich global engagement opportunities and expand access for additional students.
  • Lead ongoing evaluation of effectiveness of global engagement programming and impact made through student engagement. 

International Student Services & Study Abroad Programs:

  • Supervise institutional services for international students, including immigration processes and documentation, new student orientation, and ongoing student support and retention initiatives.
  • Supervise Study Abroad and Study Away program.

Civic Engagement:

  • Serve as the primary point person regarding civic engagement partner organizations, thoughtfully connecting them with Widener faculty and students and meeting with organizational leaders and boards on a regular basis.
  • Develop partnerships that lead to the development of service-learning courses, community-based research and capacity-building service opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and administration on grant opportunities to enrich civic engagement opportunities and partnerships with surrounding communities. 
  • Lead ongoing evaluation of effectiveness of programming and impact made through student civic engagement. 

Secondary responsibilities:

  • Maintain and strengthen existing initiatives including, but not limited to:
    • Collaborate with external foundations, various schools and colleges as well as other campus departments, students, alumni, faculty, administrators and supervisor in the coordination and implementation of program activities. Review status of work, exchange information, and resolve problems.
    • Expand the variety of global, civic and international learning opportunities for students including: Study Abroad/Away, International service and global learning opportunities, local service opportunities, and support of International Student Services and Study Abroad Programs.
  • Participate in professional development activities to maintain and enhance professional skills and maintain knowledge base of best practices in these fields.
  • Complete other duties as assigned. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required):


  • Attention to detail, and a strong commitment to innovation and collaboration.
  • Master's degree or higher.      
  • At least 5 years of administrative experience with global or civic engagement.
  • At least 3 years’ experience supervising and evaluating staff. 
  • Experience working in partnership with faculty members and academic staff regarding program development and support. 
  • Cultural awareness and competency demonstrated by working with individuals of diverse identities such as socioeconomic level, national origin, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity and veterans including those with different levels of academic preparation, varying physical and learning abilities.
  • A demonstrated commitment to educating and cultivating global citizens. 
  • Experience with grant writing and developing funding support mechanisms.
  • Informed on current issues, trends, pedagogy and literature in global, civic and international education.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office, publishing, website content management and social media software.


  • Experience in both global and civic engagement.
  • Fluency in secondary language other than English.
  • Studied or lived and worked in another country.
  • Involvement in global, civic and international education professional organizations.


  • Lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Evenings and weekends required.
  • May need to participate in international travel as needed.
  • Sit at desk long periods of time.
