Widener University is currently seeking a Biology Laboratory Assistant in College of Arts and Science, Department of Biology. This role reports to the Associate Dean of Science and provides support to current laboratory prep staff. 


This position may require additional compensated hours outside of normal work schedule.  Appropriate training and supervision will be provided.  This position requires sitting or standing for long periods of time; frequent walking and climbing of stairs; lifting and moving materials (loads of up to 35lbs); reaching above one’s head or bending below waist level.  Instructions are often provided verbally.  Work environment can be noisy and have frequent interruptions.  Multiple tasks must be balanced and completed in a timely manner.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):

Essential duties:

  • Prepare all microbiology media, reagents and materials
  • Set-up and breakdown microbiology-related labs for nursing and upper-division lab courses (including preparation and dispensing of reagents, labelling cultures and reagents, autoclaving and washing glassware, general organization of student stations and fume hoods, etc.)
  • Manage all microbiology cultures, including weekly dispensing and preservation of stock cultures.  Handle live and prepared specimens
  • Work closely with faculty teaching microbiology-related lab courses to ensure smooth planning and running of lab courses.  Develop and maintain laboratory preparation lists for multiple courses in advance of each semester.  Schedule lab preparation proactively in accordance with course syllabus
  • Collect and dispose biohazard waste safely and routinely (in accordance with EPA/OSHA and University Health and Chemical Safety guidelines)
  • Inspection of microbiology lab equipment and tools, including microscopes and other technical instruments

Secondary responsibilities:

  • Assist other lab staff as needed to run anatomy, physiology, cell and molecular, and ecology lab courses
  • Supervision of undergraduate work-study students.  Organization of their duties and work schedules
  • Work with other staff to maintain prep lab in efficient and orderly condition.  Help develop and maintain easily accessible electronic filing system for lab prep lists/schedules, methods, cultures and reagents
  • Receive supplies, stocks, and biological/chemical reagents and store appropriately
  • Help provide animal care (primarily rats and mice) and greenhouse/plant care.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required):


  • BA. or BS. in Biology or closely related field
  • Proficiency in MS Word and Excel


    • Prior laboratory experience (minimum 1-2 years post-baccalaureate) is preferred. 
    • Background in microbiology


  • Excellent quantitative, organizational, time management and problem-solving skills.  Must be proactive and be willing to take initiative. 
  • Must be able to work both in a team and independently
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Must be willing to take responsibility for their actions
  • Must demonstrate patience and courtesy
