Widener University is currently seeking an Assistant Director of Civic Engagement in the Center for Civic and Global Engagement within the Division of Student Affairs. This role reports to the Executive Director of the Center for Civic and Global Engagement and manages all initiatives related to service and civic engagement, overseeing Scholar programming, campus-wide events, and related global engagement events and activities.  

The Assistant Director of Civic Engagement will execute and implement civic engagement initiatives in Widener’s Center for Civic and Global Engagement (CCGE) that support students’ experiential learning through local and global programs on campus and community partners. This role will assist in the development, implementation, and oversee programming related to short- and long-term service opportunities, civic scholarship programs, campus-wide events, relevant Living Learning Communities, and will provide training to enhance the development of students’ civic citizenship.  This role is instrumental in supporting the CCGE’s operations and also supports events and activities across functions including International Student Services, Study Abroad, Student Exchange, and Global Engagement.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):

Essential duties:

  • Direct programming related to short- and long-term service opportunities, civic scholarship programs, campus-wide events, and relevant Living Learning Communities.
  • Develop and provide training to enhance the development of students’ civic citizenship. 
  • Oversee, develop, and implement short- and long-term service opportunities (such as monthly service opportunities, drives, and MLK Service Events).
  • Oversee all three scholar programs facilitated by the Center for Civic and Global Engagement: Bonner, Maguire and Pride Service Site Leaders. Assist in the distribution of scholarship funds annually to scholarship recipients.
  • Serve as a liaison with the Bonner Foundation  (one of the Scholar program supporters) and provide relevant updates to the Bonner Scholar programming needs as required by the Foundation.
  • Administer ongoing campus-wide programming and facilitate training (including orientation, leadership workshops and retreats) for wide-range of service-based programs, including special summer programming.
  • Coordinate administrative processes and risk management related to conducting and participating in service-learning and civic engagement.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to maintain the civic engagement (service) websites.
  • Support student and faculty political engagement activities and facilitate large-scale university service including but not limited to: Freshman Day of Service, International Alternative Spring Break trips, pre-orientation Scholar program, class presentations and volunteer and community partner training and appreciation activities.
  • Maintain and update the civic engagement (service) software systems.
  • Collaborate with Civic Engagement staff to support all three scholar programs facilitated by the Center for Civic and Global Engagement: Bonner, Maguire and Pride Service Site Leaders. 
  • Serve as a point of contact for external stakeholders seeking information about campus-wide civic engagement events and activities. 
  • Serve as advocate to support the University and division’s strategic diversity initiatives to create a welcoming campus for all students.

Secondary responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with staff to collect and assess campus data on civic engagement and service-learning activities.  Assist with development of annual impact reports.
  • Provide cross-departmental support to CCGE operations including International Student Services, Study Abroad and Student Exchange, and Global Engagement.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required):

  • Demonstrated understanding of service-learning pedagogy, leadership development theory, student development theory, and best practices in civic engagement programs.
  • Exhibits excellent communication skills, organizational skills, interpersonal skills, and has the ability to manage multiple tasks with ease and adapt to change readily.
  • Ability to design and facilitate programs, evaluate events, and assess programming and student learning.
  • Ability to work respectfully and effectively with diverse segments of internal and external college constituencies including students, faculty, colleagues, and community/civic engagement partners including perspective students and perspective civic engagement partners.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with a college/university environment in civic engagement scholar programs.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office, publishing, website content management and social media software.
  • Willingness to: learn and grow professionally, exhibit adaptability and be innovative in thought and performance.
  • Cultural awareness and competency demonstrated by working with individuals of diverse identities such as socioeconomic level, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity and veterans including those with different levels of academic preparation, varying physical and learning abilities.
  • Knowledge of and experience with cross-cultural programming and communication.
  • A demonstrated commitment to educating and cultivating global minded citizens. 

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, or related field preferred.
  • Two (2) years of program administration and/or operations management experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience in related field.
  • Campus Compact or similar civic engagement organization affiliation.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR UNUSUAL HOURS: 

  • Lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Evenings and weekends required.
  • May need to participate in international travel as needed.
  • Sit at desk long periods of time.
