Widener University is currently seeking a Communications Manager for its Delaware Law School. Located on the Delaware campus and reporting to the university Director of Communications on the Chester campus, this role cultivates relationships with law school leadership, faculty, staff and students to develop strategic communications and public relations initiatives that support enrollment goals and overall reputation enhancement. This role will be responsible for increasing the visibility and reputation of the law school through brand storytelling and media relations across traditional and digital platforms. This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):

Essential duties:

  • Finding and developing content for the Delaware Law School website that is updated regularly and reflects the Widener brand, and is suitable for sharing in the newsroom, e-newsletters, social media messaging, alumni communications and for school marketing purposes.
  • Developing and disseminating press releases, media advisories, OPED pieces, student-written columns and story pitches that will increase exposure of the law school, its leadership, signature programs and its faculty expertise through proactive and reactive outreach efforts to the regional and national news media.
  • Developing video content that tells the Delaware Law School story either through direct shooting and editing, or through project management.
  • Representing the law school in all public relations and media requests.
  • Promoting and attending law school events, and developing content and photography from them that can be shared across law school communication platforms and with the news media.
  • Planning, creating and posting all content to the law school’s main social media channels, and responding to messages as needed. Tracking message performance metrics and monitoring what is said about the law school on social media.
  • Writing content for Widener’s magazines as well as collecting and editing content produced by others for the publication.
  • Communicating with the web liaison staff person on website technology issues as needs for repairs and/or edits arise.
  • Keeping website news and events modules up to date.

Secondary responsibilities:

  • Working with academic and administrative departments to develop new, and strengthen existing, special events to maximize their appeal to prospective students and news media as part of strategic public relations initiatives.
  • Supporting university events by attending, gathering information, taking photographs and generating news content which positions them as part of a vibrant university community.
  • Updating website content on a regular basis.
  • Serving on law school  committees as requested.
  • Performing other job-related duties as assigned or directed.

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or related field and a minimum of three years of public relations or journalism experience.
  • Excellent writing and copywriting skills, and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks on deadline.
  • A creative approach to brand storytelling.
  • Experience using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube for on-brand strategic messaging.
  • The ability to shoot and edit digital photography.

Preferred:

  • Previous website content management experience and/or experience with all the major social media platforms.
  • Ability to shoot and edit basic video footage.
  • Experience in Higher Education or legal communications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR UNUSUAL HOURS: 

  • Position requires some evening and weekend assignments.
  • Moderate amount of standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending and kneeling.
  • Occasional travel between university campuses required.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a vehicle.
