Reporting to the Program Director of the Institute for Physical Therapy Education, the Clinical Assistant Professor is a 10-month, full-time non-tenure track position with responsibilities in teaching, and engaging in scholarly and service activities.  The faculty member will contribute to the University by teaching entry-level physical therapy curriculum which plays a vital role in advancing the University's College of Health & Human Services mission.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):

Essential duties:

Teaching:

  • Teach in areas of expertise and program need.
  • Develop and teach courses in the entry-level DPT Program in collaboration with, but ultimately designated by, the Program Director.
  • Ensure courses and syllabi are current and available to all students.
  • Demonstrate competency in teaching as evidenced by supervisor, peer, and student evaluations.
  • Demonstration of expertise in areas of teaching responsibility and content delivery method.
  • Demonstrate skill in course preparation, delivery, and assessment.
  • Participate in curriculum development that facilitates an inclusive teaching and learning environment.
  • Demonstrate commitment to working with a diverse student population.
  • Participate in team and/or interdisciplinary teaching.
  • Demonstrate life-long learning by seeking faculty development opportunities and teacher effectiveness tools to improve teaching.
  • Engage in service as academic advisor and/or mentor for students and/or student organizations.
  • Maintain regular office hours, guide or support students who reach out for assistance, and identify students who are struggling and need extra attention or support to be successful through use of email, phone or other appropriate means of communication.

Scholarship/Practice:

  • Engage in scholarly/clinical work related to area of interest on a regular basis and as required by expectations of the non-tenure track position.
  • Maintain currency of clinical and professional knowledge through regular continuing education. 

Service:

  • Attend all University academic events, and University, College and Program faculty meetings as required in the faculty handbook.
  • Participate in student recruitment, admission, and retention activities.
  • Serve as an academic advisor and/or mentor for students.
  • Serve on Program, College, and University Committees as indicated.
  • Assist in the accreditation process including preparation of documents and narratives for self-study reports.
  • Participate in service to the profession.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required):

Required:

  • Earned degree in Physical Therapy (e.g., DPT) from an accredited college or university, and/or academic doctorate degree.
  • Pennsylvania Physical Therapist licensed or eligible for Physical Therapist licensure in the state of Pennsylvania.
  • Minimum of 5 years clinical experience as a licensed Physical Therapist.
  • Minimum of 3 years (5 or more years preferred) teaching experience in physical therapy education settings.

Preferred:

  • 8+ years clinical experience as a licensed Physical Therapist.
  • 5+ years teaching experience in the academic setting in some capacity.
  • Preferred in-depth knowledge of adult neurologic, cardiopulmonary, and/or musculoskeletal physical therapist practice/scientific knowledgebase (in-depth knowledge of additional areas of physical therapist practice/scientific knowledge base strongly encouraged).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR UNUSUAL HOURS: 

  • Must be able to sit, stand and move about a classroom and/or campus for extended periods of time.
  • May need to lift supplies of up to 20lbs per item.
  • May be required to be available to students and clinical faculty via phone, email or other means of communication during nights and weekends.
  • May be required to travel for face-to face meetings with students and clinical faculty as budget allows.
