The Institute for Physical Therapy Education in the College of Health and Human Services at Widener University is currently seeking a Director of Clinical Education to join the physical therapy faculty.  This role reports to the Program Director of the Institute for Physical Therapy Education and serves alongside another well-experienced Director of Clinical Education colleague. This position is a 12-month, full-time, non-tenure track position with responsibilities in teaching, scholarship and service as well as an administrative component as Director of Clinical Education.

The College, which has a focus on interprofessional education, service, and research, houses programs in clinical psychology, education, human sexuality, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, physician assistant studies, and social work.  Our students represent a multitude of diverse identities. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):

Essential duties:

Director of Clinical Education

  • Communicate between academic faculty, students, and clinical faculty on all aspects of the clinical education program.
  • Coordinate and facilitate clinical education placements for students in clinical sites including, but not limited to, providing relevant information to students and clinical sites, confirming compliance with contractual and site requirements, while ensuring students meet program requirements.  
  • Monitors and documents student performance and provides consultation to students and clinical faculty. Implements remediation plans when warranted.
  • Collects, interprets, and utilizes feedback and data from a variety of sources on clinical education performance for curricular review, program development, and accreditation compliance. 
  • Utilizes a variety of electronic systems associated with the clinical education program administration.
  • Develops clinical sites and clinical faculty based on need and program analysis. 

Teaching:

  • Teach in areas of expertise and program need. Program needs include introduction to the profession of physical therapy and interprofessional collaboration, client intervention skills, clinical education preparation, health promotion and wellness, community engagement programming, and healthcare administration and leadership.
  • Demonstrate skill in course preparation, delivery, and assessment.
  • Participate in team and/or interdisciplinary teaching.
  • Demonstrate life-long learning by seeking faculty development opportunities and teacher effectiveness tools to improve teaching.
  • Maintain regular office hours, guide or support students who reach out for assistance, and identify students who are struggling and need extra attention or support to be successful through use of email, phone or other appropriate means of communication.

Scholarship/Practice:

  • Engage in scholarly/clinical work related to area of interest on a regular basis and as required by expectations of the non-tenure track position.
  • Maintain currency of clinical and professional knowledge through regular continuing education. 

Service:

  • Attend all University academic events, and University, College and Program faculty meetings as required in the faculty handbook.
  • Participate in student recruitment, admission, and retention activities.
  • Serve as an academic advisor and/or mentor for students.
  • Serve on Program, College, and University Committees as indicated.
  • Assist in the accreditation process including preparation of documents and narratives for self-study reports.
  • Participate in service to the profession including, but limited to, clinical education related groups.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required):

Required:

  • DPT and/or academic doctorate degree
  • Eligible for physical therapy licensure in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
  • Minimum of 5 years clinical experience as a licensed physical therapist
  • Minimum of 3 years as a clinical instructor

Preferred:

  • 8+ years clinical experience as a licensed physical therapist
  • 5+ years as a clinical instructor
  • 3+ years teaching experience in physical therapy academic settings
  • APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor (Level 1)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR UNUSUAL HOURS: 

  • Must be able to sit, stand and move about a classroom and/or campus for extended periods of time.
  • May need to lift supplies of up to 20lbs per item.
  • May be required to be available to students and clinical faculty via phone, email or other means of communication during nights and weekends.
  • May be required to travel for face-to face meetings with students and clinical faculty as budget allows.
